KANAANI CAT BREED MAKES HISTORIC EUROPEAN WCF CHAMPIONSHIP DEBUT WITH STANDOUT RESULTS IN FINLAND

The world’s rarest officially registered cat breed returns to international competition with championship certificates, Best in Show nominations, WCF Ring recognition and official world-ranking positions

VANTAA, FINLAND — August 9, 2026 — The exceptionally rare Kanaani cat breed successfully completed its historic European championship debut at the FenCat Jubilee Show, held August 8–9 in Vantaa, Finland.

The event marked the first international championship appearance of the modern Kanaani revival program within the World Cat Federation (WCF). Two representatives of the breed earned championship certificates, Best in Show nominations, an official WCF Ring placement and positions in the WCF Best Cat 2026 world ranking.

Five-month-old RavSalita Haya and her Israeli-born mother, RavSalita Haifa (Imp. IL), represented RavSalita Cattery, also known as Salita Golden Line. Together, mother and daughter demonstrated that the world’s rarest officially registered cat breed is not merely surviving. It has returned to the international championship arena.

Haya completed the historic two-day debut with 407 points in the official WCF Best Cat 2026 ranking. WCF judges Cezary Springer, representing Ireland, and Fabrice Calmes of France independently awarded her Excellent 1 assessments and CACP certificates. She has therefore completed two of the three requirements for the title of WCF Kitten Champion.

Haya was also nominated for Best in Show on both days and placed fifth among ten kittens in a WCF Kitten Ring. She participated in a second WCF Kitten Ring and in two special Jubilee Kitten/Junior Rings. She earned 195 points on August 8 and another 212 points on August 9.

Haya is currently ranked No. 585 worldwide in the overall WCF Kitten/Junior division and is the No. 1-ranked Kanaani in her category globally.

Because the FenCat show licence permitted only two traditional evaluations, it was impossible for Haya to receive all three certificates required for Kitten Champion during this single event. She needs only one additional CACP from a third WCF judge before she turns six months old on August 25. If a suitable licensed WCF show can be found before that date, Haya will have an opportunity to complete the title and potentially become the first WCF Kanaani Kitten Champion.

Haifa also concluded the Finnish debut with an important championship result. During her first traditional evaluation, Cezary Springer awarded her an Excellent assessment, confirming her conformity to the official Kanaani breed standard. Stress in the unfamiliar exhibition environment prevented her from receiving a championship certificate during that initial evaluation.

Haifa later returned successfully to the judging table. WCF judge Clara Sébastien of Belgium awarded her Excellent 1 and her first CAC certificate, officially beginning Haifa’s path toward the title of WCF Champion.

Haifa earned 90 WCF Best Cat points on August 8 and 150 points on August 9, bringing her total to 240 points. She also participated in two WCF Adult Rings and two Jubilee Adult Rings. She is currently ranked No. 785 in the overall WCF Adult world ranking and is the No. 1-ranked adult Kanaani globally.

Her result became one of the most meaningful stories of the weekend. After a difficult first evaluation caused by show-related stress, Haifa returned to earn her first adult championship certificate and demonstrated that she could continue pursuing the WCF Champion title.

Mission Accomplished: The Kanaani Establishes Its Place in European WCF Competition

The primary objective in Finland was to introduce the Kanaani to European WCF championship competition, obtain independent evaluations from international judges and establish the breed within the official WCF Best Cat system. That objective was fully accomplished.

Together, Haya and Haifa earned three championship certificates and accumulated 647 official WCF Best Cat points. Haya received two CACP certificates, two Best in Show nominations and a fifth-place WCF Ring result. Haifa received her first adult CAC certificate and officially began her own championship journey.

From Jerusalem to the World: The Historic Roots of the Kanaani

The Kanaani originated in Jerusalem, Israel, in the Holy Land. It is the only officially recognized pedigree cat breed whose history began specifically in Jerusalem, giving it a unique place in feline history and heritage.

The connection represented in Vantaa was not merely historical or symbolic. Haya’s mother, Haifa, was born in Israel and later imported to the United States, as officially documented in her pedigree by the designation “Imp. IL,” meaning “Imported from Israel.” Haya was born in the United States.

Standing together in Finland, Haifa and Haya embodied a living bridge connecting Jerusalem, Israel, Germany, the United States, Finland and the wider international feline community. Through them, the living lineage of the Kanaani carried its Jerusalem and Holy Land heritage from Israel to America and into the European WCF championship arena.

Reviving a Rare Breed: The People Behind the Modern Kanaani Program

The modern Kanaani revival program is currently being led by Rabbi Mikhail Salita in Brooklyn, New York, United States, and Lyudmila Vlasova in Israel. Their work connects the breed’s country of origin with the present center of the international revival effort. Vlasova’s continuing involvement in Israel remains essential to preserving the breed’s living connection to the Holy Land and to the history from which the Kanaani emerged.

The Kanaani received serious professional attention from the international judging panel in Vantaa. Cezary Springer provided rigorous evaluations and constructive advice concerning both breed quality and show temperament. His Excellent 1 assessment and CACP certificate for Haya helped begin her path toward Kitten Champion.

Fabrice Calmes delivered an exceptionally warm, engaging and informative presentation about the history, characteristics, Jerusalem origins and extraordinary rarity of the Kanaani. He subsequently awarded Haya her second Excellent 1 assessment and CACP certificate.

Clara Sébastien helped complete the historic weekend by awarding Haifa Excellent 1 and her first CAC certificate.

A Rare Breed Takes Center Stage Before an International Audience

The special presentation allowed judges, exhibitors and visitors to learn about a breed that many had never previously encountered in person. Rabbi Mikhail Salita contributed information about the Kanaani’s development in Israel and its ongoing revival in the United States, its connection to Felis lybica, its near disappearance and the international work required to protect its remaining genetic lines.

The European debut became possible through the exceptional assistance of the FenCat show organizers, Melidana and her mother, Diana. Their kindness, dedication and personal involvement transformed the idea of presenting the Kanaani in Finland into reality. Their contribution will remain an important part of the history of the breed’s return to international competition.

By welcoming the Kanaani to its Jubilee Show, FenCat brought international attention to Vantaa, the greater Helsinki region and Finnish felinology. The organizers, judges, exhibitors and visitors present in Vantaa became witnesses to a moment that will remain part of the history of the Kanaani breed, the World Cat Federation and Finland.

Fully Recognized and Ready to Compete: The Kanaani’s WCF Status

The Kanaani is already a fully recognized championship breed within the World Cat Federation. This status made it possible for Haya and Haifa to compete officially in Finland, receive championship certificates and enter the WCF Best Cat world ranking.

Rabbi Mikhail Salita, ordained by the Jewish Spiritual Leaders Institute and recently ordained as an Animal Chaplain by the Compassion Consortium, views the preservation of the Kanaani as a natural extension of both callings. His work brings together Jewish spiritual responsibility, compassion for animals and the preservation of a unique living breed originating in Jerusalem and the Holy Land.

Perseverance Across Generations: A Salita Family Championship Legacy

Championship ambition is already part of the Salita family story. Rabbi Salita’s brother, Dmitriy Salita, is a former WBF world boxing champion and an inductee into both the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame and the Jewish Sports Heritage Association Hall of Fame.

“Championship has always represented more than a title in our family,” said Rabbi Salita. “It represents perseverance, faith and the refusal to abandon a mission. My brother Dmitriy became a world champion in boxing. As an ordained rabbi and animal chaplain, I now believe that the Almighty has entrusted me with a different mission: to preserve the Kanaani breed and guide it toward producing a WCF World Champion. If Hashem has given me this responsibility, I pray that He will also give me the strength, wisdom and perseverance to fulfill it.”

Beyond Finland: The Road Toward Future Kanaani World Champions

The Finnish debut is only the beginning of a much larger championship and preservation program. The objective is to guide multiple Kanaani cats through the WCF championship system, from their first certificates to Champion, International Champion, Grand International Champion and, ultimately, World Champion.

The program is not limited to Haya and Haifa. Rabbi Salita currently has seven Kanaani cats under his care. Among them are Haya, Haifa, Laila, Arbuz, Sky and Sasha. At this stage, he does not offer them for sale because seven cats remain far too few to secure the future of the breed through a responsible global revival program.

“The Kanaani cannot be preserved by one person indefinitely,” said Rabbi Salita. “I need devoted partners—responsible breeders and supporters in different countries who understand that this is not simply a commercial opportunity, but a historic preservation mission.”

Rabbi Salita hopes eventually to place carefully selected Kanaani cats with committed international partners who can help establish secure breeding lines in other countries. Among his personal dreams is the possibility of gifting Kanaani cats to Ivanka Trump and Tiffany Trump, should they ever wish to become involved in supporting the preservation and international visibility of this unique Holy Land breed.

Turning Championship Success Into Global Recognition

Each WCF certificate and championship title will strengthen international confidence in the Kanaani. As more Kanaani cats become Champions, International Champions, Grand International Champions and eventually World Champions, the breed will gain greater visibility among experienced breeders. That recognition can help attract the serious international partners required to preserve and distribute the breed responsibly.

Israel stands first in this history as the birthplace of the Kanaani and the source of its living natural and cultural heritage. Germany stands second, having played an important role in the breed’s development, formal establishment and international history. Today, the United States serves as the center of the modern revival program because the principal surviving breeding group is under Rabbi Salita’s care in New York.

From Jerusalem to Germany, from New York to Finland, the Kanaani story now connects its historic origins with its international future.

WCF Success Could Strengthen the Kanaani’s Path Toward TICA Recognition

Within The International Cat Association, the Kanaani is currently registered as a New Experimental Breed. Its verified WCF championship certificates, international evaluations, pedigrees, Best in Show nominations, WCF Ring results and participation in the official WCF Best Cat ranking can provide valuable supporting evidence for the breed’s future advancement through TICA’s recognition program.

WCF championship success does not automatically change the Kanaani’s status within TICA. However, every documented international result strengthens the evidence that the breed has an active preservation program, identifiable representatives and the ability to participate successfully in organized feline competition.

The long-term objective is to continue pursuing the highest championship titles available to the fully recognized Kanaani within WCF while building the breeding foundation, international partnerships and supporting record necessary for advancement within TICA.

From Extreme Rarity to an International Comeback

The Kanaani has been recognized for its exceptional rarity by Official World Records, Noble World Records and Record Holders Republic. An application concerning its status as the world’s rarest cat breed has also been submitted to Guinness World Records and remains under consideration.

After approximately 26 years of near-total absence from the international show scene, the only officially recognized pedigree cat breed originating in the Holy Land has announced its return loudly and clearly.

The Kanaani came to Finland not merely to be displayed, but to be evaluated, ranked and remembered. It leaves Vantaa with three championship certificates between two cats, two Best in Show nominations, a fifth-place WCF Kitten Ring result, 647 combined WCF Best Cat points and two No. 1 Kanaani breed-ranking positions.

The mission is larger than winning titles. The titles are the means through which the Kanaani can earn visibility, attract responsible international partners and secure its survival for generations to come.
